Monkey D. Luffy / "Straw Hat"

Name: Monkey D. Luffy

Haired Shanks

Occupations: Captain; Pirate
Nickname: "Straw Hat Luffy"
1st Appears: Chapter 1; Episode 1
Age: 17
Height: 173cm / 5' 8"
Devil Fruit: Gomu Gomu no Mi
Bounty: Beli 300,000,000

Monkey D. Luffy
is a pirate and the main protagonist of One Piece. He is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, which are sometimes referred to as the "Luffy Pirates". He is currently one of eleven pirates who have been referred to as "The Eleven Supernovas".
Luffy is renowned for wearing his trademark Straw Hat (from which he gets his nickname 'Straw Hat Luffy') which was given to him when he was young by the legendary pirate captain Red-Haired Shanks. His outfit somewhat mimics Shanks' own outfit in that he wears short trousers (although his are much shorter then Shanks') and sandals. Luffy also wears a red vest and has a scar underneath his left eye (he got it in Chapter 1, to prove his courage to Shanks and his pirates) and short black hair.
Luffy, for some reason, has the same outfit over most of the series, as opposed to the rest of the crew. Luffy may wear a different outfit to suit the climate of an island (like a winter coat on Drum Island or desert robes in Arabasta), but will switch back to his trademark vest and shorts after the adventures on that island are over. Notably, in Enies Lobby he wears black shorts because they had pockets in which he could carry meat, on the Thriller Bark Island he wears an orange vest and red shorts, and on the Sabaody Archipelago he wears a blue vest. He does, however, no matter where he is, wear his straw hat through absolutely everything though at the start, the hat was prone to getting knocked off his head easily forcing Luffy to either put it aside or have someone hold onto it during battles. Since then he gotten a string strap for it, allowing the hat to hang from his neck during fights.
Eiichiro Oda (One Piece's manga-ka) has mentioned that Luffy mostly resembles a monkey (he sometimes even makes a monkey face). According to Oda, Luffy is represented by the color red, and smells like meat.
As of Thriller Bark, he has been wearing a glass armband that he found in the loot stashed on their ship. During the most recent arc, he gave his armband to Buggy the Clown in exchange for information on how to get to Ace (which happened after Buggy discovered that the armband is a treasure map).

Ronoroa Zoro / "Pirate Hunter"

Name: Ronoroa Zoro
Jap. Name: ロロノア・ゾロ
Affiliation: Straw Hat Pirates
Occupations: Swordsman, Pirate, ex-
Pirate Hunter
1st Appears: Chapter 3; Episode 1
Age: 19
Height: 178cm / 5'10"
Devil Fruit: No
Bounty: Beli 120,000,000

Roronoa Zoro
is a pirate and former bounty hunter. He is the first person to join Luffy's crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, and is a master swordsman. Despite no clear role being given to him, Zoro is often labeled by fans as the second-in-command of the pirate crew (the First Mate). Partially due to the fact that in the series several captains refer to their first mate as their "Partners" or "Champions" and Luffy refers to Zoro by these earlier on in the series. He is currently one of eleven pirates who have been referred to as "The Eleven Supernovas". He and Killer are the only supernovas who are not captains.
He is almost always seen carrying around his three swords, usually bundled up with his green sash (or haramaki) over his right hip which is favorable so he could easily draw any one of them with his left hand; his right hand is usually seen resting over the swords. This may indicate that he is left-handed, for most sword wielding characters in the One Piece Universe wear their swords to the left. On his left ear he wears three earrings and he normally has a bandanna tied around his left arm that he uses when he is fighting serious. The rest of his clothes vary from time to time, however he usually wears a white shirt, dark green trousers, black shoes and the green haramaki sash around his waist.
His body is covered with scars from his many battles- during the Baratie Arc he lost a duel with his rival, Juracule Mihawk, and was left with a massive scar across his torso. In the Little Garden Arc he tried to free himself from a wax prison by cutting off his feet. Although he did not entirely succeed, he gave himself a scar around each ankle.
His other remarkable feature is his green hair, of which Sanji often teases him about, calling him 'marimo' (moss-ball)(moss-head in Funimation dub and VIZ manga).
According to Oda, Zoro resembles a shark. Oda uses the color green to represent Zoro, and he smells of steel.

Nami / "Thief-Cat"

Nami (ナミ) is a pirate and the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates. Nami is a young woman with short, orange hair and a relatively slim build. She has a tattoo on her left shoulder which represents mikan and pinwheels (a homage to her past), where she used to have a tattoo for being a member of Arlong's Crew. Near the beginning of the series, Nami wore thick, low cut leather boots and a simple blouse. However, during the Arlong Park arc and thereafter, Nami wore open-toed shoes and more revealing outfits (With the tattoo no longer being a secret). She seemed to have abandoned the shoes for high-heeled boots as of Chapter 435. She usually pairs her tops with skirts with rings on them. Her overall physique matured suddenly (though this is, most likely, a simple change in style of artwork). Her fashion frequently changes as well as her hair style. Many of her shirts feature four-letter words, such as "MODE," "GOLD" or "EVIL," similar to a shirt that Bellemere once wore that had "MACE" on it.
According to the author (in response to a fan's question), Nami's dress size was 36-22-34. The author has also replied to a fan's question to saying that right now Nami's measurements are as follows: Height 169 B 95 W 55 H 85, though her breasts seem to grow into and then "reset" throughout the arcs (this is much more obvious in the manga). He has also said that Nami resembles a cat, that he uses the color orange to represent her, and she smells of mikan and money.

Usopp / "Sogeking"

Usopp (ウソップ) is a pirate and the sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates. When Usopp was first introduced, he was often (comically) labeled as the "Liar" of the Straw Hat Pirates. Usopp is a tanned, skinny teenager with black curly hair and a long nose, which is apparently an allusion to Pinocchio, a wooden boy from a story of the same name who possessed a nose that would stretch after he lied. He usually wears a dark yellow plaid bandanna, special sniper goggles, brown overalls with a white sash and no shirt. Usopp inherited his famous nose from his mother, while the rest of his face closely resembles his father's.
Oda claims that Usopp is most represented by the armadillo. Oda has also said that he uses the color yellow to represent Usopp, and he smells of gunpowder.
Sogeking is Usopp's alter-ego developed during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arc. When he left the crew, later seeing the others trying to save Robin made him feel guilty for leaving. He stated to Sanji and Franky that he cannot help them fight for this reason. He hastily 'disguised' himself in a mask and cape and began calling himself "Sogeking, the king of the snipers". During this facade he sometimes dons a deeper voice which can be seen as the "true" Sogeking. Everyone except for Luffy and Chopper already knew that Sogeking was Usopp at the sight of Usopp's significantly long nose.
As his alter-ego Sogeking, Usopp was able to fight alongside the others without having to deal with his departure. During his time spent acting as Sogeking, Usopp began to realize that while he was one of the weaker crew members, his role as the crew's sniper and a supporting crew member make him more valuable than he thought. Ultimately, he has been recorded as Sogeking on his bounty.
During his fight with Perona, Usopp showed signs of a split personality and even went so far as to argue inside his head with his alter ego over their situation. Although they are technically the same person, Sogeking in comparison to Usopp is much more confident and took over once Usopp adorned the mask again, only slipping back into Usopp once the mask came off. Whether or not Usopp is developing Dissociative Personality Disorder (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder), is debatable and has yet to be confirmed by the author or within the story.

Sanji / "Black Leg"

Sanji (サンジ ) is a pirate and the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is the fourth person to accept Luffy's offer of joining the crew. Sanji is a tall, slim young man with blond hair, often well-dressed, and keeps his hair brushed over his left eye. Indeed, Sanji's left eye is so rarely seen that many fans have questioned the assumption that he has one at all. In the Manga it is never seen, but is seen in the anime (episodes 21, 27, 82, 128 and Movie 6 although usually very briefly and most likely due to animation errors). He almost always wears a black, double-breasted suit with tie and long-sleeved, buttoned shirts of varying colors, with or without pinstripes. His fashion changes at times, like in the Water 7 Arc where he had no suit jacket, but a black vest over an orange, pinstriped shirt. He also wears dress shoes, mostly for his Red Leg martial arts. These shoes are extremely durable, and were designed to increase the power of his attacks, though he can very well attack without them as he did against Kuroobi.
According to Oda, Sanji most resembles a duck, is identified by the color blue, and smells of seafood and cigarettes.
Sanji's right eyebrow forms a spiral, and he gets very upset if somebody (usually Zoro) chooses to point it out.

Tony Tony Chopper / "Cotton Candy Lover"

Tony Tony Chopper (トニートニー・チョッパー) is the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is a reindeer that ate the Hito Hito no Mi and comes from Drum Island. Most of the time, Chopper is a toddler-sized human/reindeer hybrid, his devil fruit abilities allow him to change his appearance depending on the situation. Chopper's left antler has a metal plate wrapped around it at all times, from being broken in a fight when he was younger. Chopper also has a remarkable feature that no other reindeer have, and that is blue nose, while normal reindeers have black ones. As Oda's style evolved, Chopper has been given a more "chibi" appearance. This means that when in his Brain Point, Chopper has a larger head and eyes.
A running gag is that various characters in One Piece think Chopper is a tanuki (raccoon-dog, often simply translated as "raccoon") whilst in his Brain Point form. This is a play on the similar word "tonakai," the Japanese word for reindeer, from which the "Tony" in Chopper's name is derived. His heavy point form likewise is mistaken for a gorilla or an abominable snowman.
Lots of female characters find Chopper very cute such as Porche .
Oda has stated that he uses the color pink to represent Chopper, and (Oda was answering the questions as Chopper) for his smell, "how am I supposed to know?".

Nico Robin / "Demon Child"

Nico Robin (ニコ・ロビン) is the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates. She was originally introduced as the Vice President of Baroque Works known as Miss All Sunday before joining up with the Straw Hats. She ate the Hana Hana no Mi.
Nico Robin is a tall woman with shoulder length black hair. She usually wears somewhat revealing clothing (usually showing her breast cleavage, sometimes even shows her belly) that is either dark in color or consisting of leather, sometimes both. Robin sometimes wears a gold arm band with white strings attach to it and has the letter N on it which stands for her family name and has worn a cowgirl hat on numerous occasions. Robin also resembles her mother greatly, with the exception of her hair color and style. In the anime her skin tone is also slightly darker than her mother's.
The author has also replied to a fan's question to saying that right now Robin's measurements are as follows:
  • Height: 188cm (6'2"), making her the third tallest member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Her 3 measurements are (according to Sanji) B99 W59 H89 (39"-23"-35").
According to Oda, Robin most resembles a crane, is represented by the color purple, and she smells of flowers.

Franky / "Cyborg Franky"

Franky (フランキー) a.k.a. Cutty Flam (カティ・フラム) is the shipwright for the Straw Hat Pirates. He is a 34 year old cyborg from Water 7, and was introduced in the story as the leader of the Franky Family, a group of ship dismantlers. He is also so far one of the two cyborgs so far shown in the series, with the other being the Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma, and was the first one to be introduced. He was originally named Cutty Flam until he threw away his original name for his nickname per the request by Iceburg to hide his identity. Franky and followers were originally introduced as antagonists against the Straw Hats until circumstances forced them to become allies. Per the request of the Franky Family, Franky was allowed to join the Straw Hats to fulfill his dream. He is the eighth member of the Straw Hat crew and the seventh to join Luffy's crew.
As a direct result of his cyborg modifications that he's conducted upon himself as well as years having spent as a ship dismantler, bounty hunter, and street thug in Water 7, Franky is a powerfully built man with a height of at least seven feet tall. He has brightly-colored blue hair. His usual choice of clothing usually comprises of a speedo and a shirt. According to Eiichiro Oda, Franky most resembles a bull, he is represented by the color light blue (cyan), and he smells of cola.

Brook / "Humming Skeleton"

Brook (ブルック) is the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is a skeleton that they found onboard a ghost ship after they opened a mysterious barrel adrift on the open ocean and escaped from a mysterious storm. He is a Devil Fruit user who ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi and is an undead being brought back into a pseudo-immortal state because of its powers. He is the ninth member of the Straw Hat crew and the eighth to accept to join Luffy's crew. He is also one of the two swordsmen onboard their current ship with the other being Zoro. He is the long awaited musician that Luffy wanted since his journey began.
He was originally a part of the Rumbar Pirates and was appointed the position of captain of the remaining half the crew that was left after Captain Yorki split it to save the survivors of a disease. Brook is particularly the closest one to Laboon and is the one who is carrying the final song of him and his crew, recorded on a Tone Dial, before they all died, to be delivered to the whale. Before that, he was the leader of a battle convoy in an as-of-yet unnamed kingdom.
Brook is an extremely tall skeleton dressed in formal attire complete with top hat and cane. Despite having no skin, his head still has an afro which he says is because his hair has deep roots. Brook's coat, top hat, pants, and afro, are black while the inner linings of his coat are yellow orange. The ribbon tied in between his coat and around his neck is blue. The outer covering of Brook's cane sword which he carries is purple. Also, due to his many years of seclusion his clothes have become somewhat tattered.
Before his death, Brook was a tall skinny 38 year old man with a rather distinctive face. He had a slight goatee on his chin and some side burns. He typically wore shades. On his forehead was a scar that slightly resembles a diagonal omega sign (Ω). This scar was retained in his skeleton state as a distinctive crack across his skull. Brook's facial appearance, accompanied with his style of clothing, resembles a type of appearance that is commonly associated with various music artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, and other musical celebrities with similar features.
In Gear Spirit, Brook is presented with a different color scheme than the one depicted in both the manga and anime. The color of the collar of his coat is gray while the ribbon and the frills coming out of his coat are purple. In some artwork within the game, Brook's nose socket is uncolored. The outer covering of Brook's cane sword is also colored red in the game. This color scheme is so because the game was developed before an official color scheme from the manga was presented.
According to Oda, Brook most resembles a horse. He is identified by the colors black and white, and he smells of tea.

The Shichibukai

The Shichibukai (七武海, literally Seven Military Seas, Seven Warlords of the Sea in the English versions), sometimes known as the Ouka Shichibukai (王下七武海, literally Royal Shichibukai), are a set of fictional characters in the anime and manga series One Piece. The Shichibukai is an organization of seven privateers that are in the service of the World Government. The Shichibukai do not care about or respect the Government (excluding Bartholomew Kuma) or even their group. The Shichibukai seem to be a mixture of the more chaotic Yonkou and the more orderly Marines. There is an enormous range in the bounties between the members, with Donquixote Doflamingo, who has the highest known former bounty of the Shichibukai (or any other known person) at Beli 340,000,000, Hancock with a comparatively low bounty of Beli 80,000,000, and Blackbeard, with no former bounty at all. In order for one to become a Shichibukai, one must be able to show their strength against other pirates while choosing to pledge loyalty to the World Government. As expected, most members were already notorious pirates with high bounties, but even relative unknowns can be admitted if they accomplish some feat to prove their strength, such as defeating someone with a world-wide known strength.

Duties
They do not offer open opposition to the rule of the World Government, but are not guaranteed to follow its orders either. They are only allowed to attack other pirates and must also pay the Government a tenth of their loot. Each member of the Shichibukai must also have strong intimidation skills and a fearsome representation to put off others becoming a pirate and make them fear them. In addition, given the dialogue between Bartholomew Kuma and the Gorousei, it can assumed that a member of the Shichibukai must not be defeated, or have widespread knowledge of a said defeat (or at least by rookies who are gaining influence such as Luffy). Some of the members do various tasks for the government, such as taking over new islands for the World Government (described as "liberating") and guarding nations, but their ultimate purpose is to keep other pirates in check. Most importantly, the Shichibukai serve to help keep the balance of The Three Great Powers. Theoretically, the Shichibukai are allies of the government, and in war time would fight alongside the Marines. Still, many Marine officers (for example Commodore Smoker, Admiral Kizaru and Fleet Admiral Sengoku) dislike them and think of the Shichibukai just as pirates. Several high-ranking Marines expressed surprise that even two of the Shichibukai actually bothered to show up when summoned for the meeting about Crocodile's removal, and they were shocked when a third arrived. Tellingly, of the others besides Kuma that showed up, Doflamingo came out of sheer boredom (passing the time before the meeting by nearly forcing two marines to duel each other), and Mihawk came only to hear about the pirates being discussed in the meeting. When they are not under orders of the World Government, they have no commitment to aid the efforts of the Marines.

Affiliations
Aside with the World Government, the Shichibukai are (or were) affiliated with another group(s).
  • Juracule Mihawk: Former rival of Red-Haired Shanks, remains in friendly contact with Jinbei.
  • Jimbei: Second Captain of the Sunny Pirates (crew split into at least three: Sunny Pirates, Arlong Pirates and Macro Fishman Pirates)
  • Sir Crocodile: Former president of Baroque Works (disbanded upon arrest as well as stripped of his title and reinstated as a pirate)
  • Donquixote Doflamingo: Former leader of the Bellamy Pirates (abandoned), former owner of the Human Auctioning House (given to Disco)
  • Bartholomew Kuma: Part of Pacifista program created by Vegapunk
  • Gecko Moria: Former Captain of an unnamed crew (presumed to be massacred by Kaidou), leader of Thriller Bark and the Mysterious Four
  • Boa Hancock: Former slave of Tenryuubito (freed by Fisher Tiger), Captain of the Kuja Pirates, Empress of Amazon Lily, has befriended Monkey D. Luffy
  • Marshall D. Teach: Former subordinate of the Whitebeard Pirates (defected), Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates
Abilities & Powers
The Shichibukai are a group of seven of the strongest pirates in the world and are one of the 3 Great Powers, the others being the Yonkou and Marine Headquarters. In terms of power, the exact relationship between the Shichibukai, Marine Headquarters and Yonkou is unknown. However, considering that these organizations are stated to be a balance and the fact that the loss of Crocodile threatened said balance, the most reasonable conclusion is that each organization is roughly equivalent in strength. At least two of the Shichibukai (Moria and Mihawk) are said to have been rivals of Yonkou members, Kaidou and Shanks respectively. Bartholomew Kuma has also allowed himself to become part of the Pacifista project. The strength of at least one Shichibukai: Boa Hancock, has been acknowledged by Fleet Admiral Sengoku himself. This, in addition to the fact that losing a single member of the Shichibukai can throw off the balance of the world powers and cause distress to the World Government, indicates the extreme power each individual has. Because of their deal with the World Government, the Shichibukai are considered "Government Dogs" by other pirates. At the same time, they are also feared by them because all of the Shichibukai are insanely strong, each capable of destroying an average pirate crew on their own with no effort as seen with Mihawk and Crocodile. They have such a fierce reputation that even other powerful and famous pirates are unnerved by them as seen with the captain of the Kid Pirates, Eustass Kid, actually seemed heavily disturbed when he witnessed the arrival of a Pacifista cyborg (mistaking it for the real Kuma) on the Sabaody Archipelago, close to where his crew were, despite the fact that his bounty was higher than Kuma's former bounty:
  • Juracule Mihawk (Nicknamed "Hawk-Eyes"): Kokutou Yoru, Pendant cross dagger, World's greatest swordsmanship; Bounty: Unknown
  • Jimbei (Nicknamed "Knight of the Sea"): Fishman Super Strength; Unknown; Bounty: Beli 250,000,000
  • Sir Crocodile (Title: "Mr. 0"): Suna Suna no Mi, Logia; Scorpion-poison hook; Bounty: Beli 81,000,000
  • Donquixote Doflamingo: Power that manipulates people like puppets; Bounty: Beli 340,000,000
  • Bartholomew Kuma (Nicknamed "Tyrant" and "Pacifista"): Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, Paramecia; Pacifista armour and laser launcher; Bounty: Beli 296,000,000
  • Gecko Moria: Kage Kage no Mi, Paramecia; Zombie army; Bounty: Beli 320,000,000
  • Boa Hancock (Nicknamed "The Pirate Empress"): Mero Mero no Mi, Paramecia; Haoushoku Haki; Bounty: Beli 80,000,000
  • Marshall D. Teach (Nicknamed "Blackbeard"): Yami Yami no Mi, Logia; Super-Human Strength; Bounty: Unknown

The Eleven Supernovas

The Eleven Supernovas (十一人の超新星, Juichinin no Choushinsei) is a term designated by Oda referring to the top eleven rookie Pirates who arrived in the Sabaody Archipelago. They are all renowned pirates whose individual bounties are greater than Beli 100,000,000. Nearly all of the Supernova except Zoro (and possibly Killer and Urouge) are confirmed Devil Fruit users, and only two (Zoro and Killer) don't serve as captains of Pirate ships. According to Shakuyaku, one of the Supernovas could potentially be responsible for inspiring a whole new generation of pirates. With the exception of the Straw Hat Pirates, most Supernovas try to avoid the paths of the Tenryuubito.
The Supernovas are the top rookie pirates from nine different crews who all chose one of the seven routes along the Grand Line. They are comprised of the captains of the nine crews as well as two other crewmates who also are above the threshold of in 100,000,000. They come from all seas - East Blue, West Blue, South Blue, North Blue, Sky Island and the Grand Line itself. They all recently ended up on the Sabaody Archipelago at the same time.
Their common trait is that they have caught the attention of the World Government and have survived many ordeals that have wiped out other pirate crews along the Grand Line. Though they are all par with each other as far as threat level is concerned, they represent different views on piracy. To date, their journeys along the Grand Line are unknown, save the Straw Hat Pirates journey, which is the main focus of the storyline and that the Kid Pirates have been killing civilians along their way. Recently, with the exception of the Straw Hat, Heart and Kid Pirates, the Supernovas learned that Portgas D. Ace of the Whitebeard Pirates will soon undergo a public execution.
Currently, due to a major mishap primarily caused by the Straw Hat captain, Monkey D. Luffy, on the Human Auction House, all of the Supernovas are struggling to evacuate the Archipelago, confronting marines, an army of Pacifista, and ultimately the Admiral Kizaru and the large guardian Sentoumaru. And one by one, they start displaying their unique abilities that made their outrageously high bounties well-deserved.

Straw Hat Pirates

The Straw Hat Pirates (麦わら海賊団) are the main focus and heroes of the anime and manga One Piece. They are called the "Straw Hats" after Luffy's signature straw hat that was given to him by Shanks, and are sometimes called the "Luffy Pirates" on merchandise. Up until the Water 7 arc, they originally sailed on the Going Merry. After the Enies Lobby arc, they gained a new ship to sail on called the Thousand Sunny. They are currently made up of 9 members whose total combined bounty equals to Beli 700,000,050. As a result of Luffy's choice in who joins, the Straw Hats are notable for being one of the most varied, if not bizarre, pirating crews in the One Piece world. Their ranks have members so vastly different from one another that it almost seems random in retrospect. These include a shape shifting reindeer that can be mistaken for something else depending on his form, a cyborg who wears almost nothing except for shirts and speedoes, and a lively undead perverted skeletal musician. Amongst them they have four Devil Fruit users which includes Luffy himself. The majority of them are also fairly young, with only three members being adults past their early twenties, although the two oldest members are just as childish as the others. Another thing is that they consider their ships to be crew members as much as the others. In addition, Nefertari Vivi and Carue, despite not actually joining the crew, are considered honorary members of the Straw Hat Crews.

Straw Hat Crews:

Juracule "Hawkeyes" Mihawk

Name: Juracule Mihawk
Jap. Name: ジュラキュール・ミホーク
Affiliation: Shichibukai
Occupations: Greatest Swordsman in
the world; Shichibukai
Nickname: "Hawkeyes"
1st Appears: Chapter 49; Episode 23
Age: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Devil Fruit: No
Bounty: Unknown

Juracule "Hawk-Eyes" Mihawk is a fictional pirate from the anime and manga One Piece. He is a Shichibukai and the greatest swordsman in the world. Mihawk wears very decorative, ornate, black-and-red clothing. He wears a wide-brimmed hat decorated with a large plume, a long, black cloak, a cross pendant (which unsheathes a small dagger). He also carries a large black sword. His nickname comes from his strangely colored eyes, which resemble that of a hawks.
In the past Mihawk was also a rival to one of the most powerful pirates in One Piece, Red-Haired Shanks, which also speaks volumes about his power, but ceased their rivalry after losing interest in fighting a one-armed man like him. He still has a neutral relationship with the pirate and seems to know how to track him down if he has business with the pirate. He and Shanks do manage to get along, regardless of the fact that the two are opposites in personalities. Shanks is also able to get Mihawk to join in when he threw a party to celebrate Luffy's coming, even when moments beforehand Mihawk had scorned how laid-back Shanks was.
Mihawk travels around in a coffin-shaped raft with two green-flamed candles, a single black sail, and a single seat. The fact that he can traverse across the unforgiving oceans, as well as the Grand Line itself, in such a meager craft is yet another testament to his abilities. His first demonstration of power was to defeat Don Krieg's fleet of 50 ships and 5,000 men by himself just before a storm strike.
He wields the Black Sword Kokutou Yoru, the strongest Sword in the world. It's an ornately decorated, man-sized (6 feet) sword shaped like a cross with a shiny black blade, which is curved at the end. It also seems to generate otherworldly purple streaks as it slices, as seen when he cut down Zoro and when he split Don Krieg's ship in half.Yet as well as having the ability to use it to slice up entire fleets of ships, he is graceful with the blade enough to knock bullets and change their course with little effort. The cross pendant worn on his neck is actually a small dagger. Though it appears to have no value, in the hands of Mihawk, it was able to defeat Zoro with the slightest bit of pressure, and was able to stab into his heart.

Buggy The Clown

ex-Jolly Roger Pirates
Occupation: Captain; Pirate
Nickname: "Pirate Clown"/"Big Nose"

Devil Fruit: Bara Bara no Mi

Buggy the Clown is a fictional character of the manga and anime One Piece. The big, red nose on his face is, in fact, his real nose; this is a fact he is very touchy about, going so far as to destroy an entire town when a couple of kids made fun of his nose. Buggy will often feign intelligence, only to have his true incompetence revealed. Although he is not "stupid" in the traditional sense, he is prone to gross misjudgments that cost him; usually this is due to his overconfidence. In the original Japanese version of One Piece, he inserts hade ni (派手に, "flashy"), into almost every sentence he speaks ("Die with flash! You flashy bastard!"). Buggy accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, a Devil Fruit which allows him to separate his body parts and control them independent of each other, but robbed him of the ability to swim, which, according to Shanks (back when the two were still cabin boys at Roger's ship) he was excellent at. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to slashing, cutting and cleaving attack; any such attack just separates him into his component parts.

In addition, most of his body is capable of flying through the air, with enough force to send a man flying through a wall - with the crucial exception of his feet. Even though the parts are separate, Buggy can still feel what the part feels; e.g. when Luffy attacked Buggy, he separated his torso from his waist, only to find that Luffy was aiming for the crotch (needless to say, this left him with a rather painful result). No matter how much of his body he separates, something also seems to act normal; e.g., his feet walking as normal while Buggy sends the rest of his body flying. Though Buggy is a strong fighter and his Devil Fruit power makes him almost invincible, he was constantly leaving himself open in the latter half of his match for Luffy due to distractions, resulting in many careless mistakes. A weakness of his fruit is that if a component part is restrained, he can't use the component part, shown by Nami when she restrained a part of his body in their first fight with him.

The major flaw of his devil fruit's ability is his feet. Should his feet not remain on the ground firmly, he cannot separate the components of his body. Therefore, he cannot split his body in airborne.

Red-Haired Shanks is the pirate who inspired Luffy to go on his journey and is the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates. He is also one of the Yonkou. Shanks always wears a long black cape over his shoulders and until he met Luffy, wore a straw hat that he had worn for many years beforehand. He always wears trousers that are cut below the knee as well as a pair of sandals and is unshaven with a short beard. The most striking thing about Shanks is the color of his red hair, of which his nick-name 'Red Haired Shanks' comes from. He also has three scars across his left eye, which were revealed to have been given to him by Blackbeard, as well as having a missing left arm. He usually carries a Sabre on his right hip.

At the start of One Piece, Shanks bore much more similarity to Luffy. As Oda's style changed, Shanks began to become more distinct. The shape of his eyes are drawn much sharper. His nose has become more redefined, similar to how Nico Robin's nose is heavily defined from other character's in the series.Little is known about what Shanks can do. While Shanks has yet to display the full extent of his combat abilities, it is heavily implied that he's one of the strongest characters in the series. After saving Luffy from a Sea King, Shanks was able to frighten it off with a single angry glare using Haki. He does not have the abilities of a Devil Fruit as he is capable of swimming. Later, while boarding Whitebeard's ship for their meeting, half of Whitebeard's crew lapses into unconsciousness and the ship itself begins taking damage from Shanks' mere presence. Whitebeard's men attribute this to his superior "Haki." Also, when Shanks and Whitebeard hit each other with their weapons, the sky above them split, hinting the incredible power of the Yonkou.
So far in the series, Shanks has only been seen wielding a sword in combat. While his use of it was only briefly shown, the fact that he was able to match a blow from Whitebeard is a clear indication of the strength he puts behind his attacks. Before losing his arm to rescue Luffy, Mihawk would often seek out Shanks for duels. Since Mihawk is classified as the world's greatest swordsman, and Shanks is a former rival of his, it can be assumed that Shanks is an extremely proficient swordsman. It's also possible that his sword is one of the greatest swords.

Bounties

A Bounty is a set amount of money placed on a person's head as a reward for their capture/death. Normally a bounty is issued by a government official or by the police. The idea is to tempt others to aid with the capture of the said criminal so he or she can be brought to justice quickly; the amount increases with the individual's threat level. The money often leads people, known as Bounty Hunters to make careers trying to find and capture these wanted people. In the Whiskey Peak arc, the Baroque Works agents state that up to 30% of the bounty money may be lost bringing in someone dead as opposed to alive and promoting a public execution.
In the eye of a pirate, a high bounty may actually be a source of pride for them, seen in Luffy's enthusiasm on his first bounty and Sanji's constant complaining of his lack of bounty and bad picture when he finally gets one. After all, having been assigned a bounty means that the World Government as well as the Marines acknowledge the threat of the person to whom it is assigned. For others, such as Kuro, it can be an annoyance.
Earning a large bounty in quick time also gives the pirate notorious attention and (generally) global reputation. After earning a bounty of Beli 80,000,000 in a single campaign, the World Government offered Boa Hancock the position of Shichibukai. Blackbeard believed he could become a Shichibukai member if he defeated Monkey D. Luffy, whose bounty jumped from Beli 30,000,000 to Beli 100,000,000 following the defeat of Baroque Works then Beli 300,000,000 by annihilating CP9 members and marines, rescuing Nico Robin, and destroying Enies Lobby; Blackbeard would settle for acheiving his goal by capturing Ace instead, and succeed.
Since bounties are perhaps the one way for many to compare different people, stacking them against averages helps determine an approximate "threat level". For example, the average bounty in the East Blue is Beli 3,000,000, so a big one there would probably be Beli10,000,000 or more. Since East Blue is defined as the weakest of the four seas outside of the Grand Line, West, North, and South Blue must have higher average bounties and have a greater number of famous criminals hailing from their waters. However, the four 'cardinal (direction)' seas pale in comparison to the Grand Line (up to Mariejoie), where an average bounty is around Beli 100,000,000, while pales in comparision to the New World (or the second half of the Grand Line), where Beli 100,000,000 is common or weak. And the only persons confirmed to have traveled in the New World (all of whom, it is noteworthy, are either dead or have not directly commented on their travels) are: Gol D. Roger, Silvers Rayleigh, Crocus, Red-Haired Shanks and most of his crew, Whitebeard and most of his crew, "Red Leg" Zeff, Fisher Tiger "The Adventurer", and "Saw-Tooth" Arlong.
The full extent of the greatest bounties in the world have not yet been shown in detail. Four of the seven known bounties of the current Shichibukai members are around Beli 300,000,000 - from Jinbei's Beli 250,000,000 to Doflamingo's Beli 340,000,000. The greatest amount seen in the series is the former 340,000,000 bounty of the Shichibukai Donquixote Doflamingo, and it is known (due to a SBS) that a bounty can achieve Beli 500,000,000. While there never was a bounty that high shown in the series, the actual top bounties in the world are expected to belong to characters including Whitebeard, called the Most Wanted Man in the World and closest to finding One Piece, and members of Gold Roger's crew like Silvers Rayleigh (who is known to have a active bounty). So far Dragon has been deemed "the most wanted criminal in the world".
A bounty reflects both the threat and power of an individual. Engaging in activities deemed criminal by the World Government, associating yourself with groups deemed dangerous by the World Government, or participating in forbidden practices (especially researching the Poneglyphs) will usually give you a bounty or increase it. Even performing acts dedicated to self-preservation (like Luffy declaring war on the World Government to save Robin) can cause people to be assigned bounties if it goes against the law.
In the case of power, a bounty can increase for several reasons:
  • The threat of a person's observed combat abilities (as said by Aokiji);
  • More experienced bounty hunters volunteering to capture the individual or group (like the Achino Family, non-canonically, trying to catch the entire Straw Hat Crew);
  • Inspiring criminal acts when provoked or inciting others to act 'criminally' (for example, Whitebeard destroying Marine ships that followed his fleet for reconnaissance and Dragon [Luffy's father] leading his organization to topple countries allied with the World Government);
The power of a criminal is very limited knowledge to the Marines; unless the division is strongly linked to Marine HQ at Mariejoie (having a high-rank commanding officer like Garp) or can gather information locally, most Marines have a general idea (if any) what abilities a wanted person has. For example, Tony Tony Chopper has been mistaken as the Straw Hat crew's pet (equaling his bounty of only Beli 50) even though he defeated Kumadori of CP9 and assaulted Marines; Luffy's cumulative bounty does not include his victory over Eneru because Skypiea is a relatively unknown area to the Blue Seas, and even on the Shaboady Archipelago Marines remark that he has a power of the Devil Fruit but cannot identify it until seeing it used; and Arlong paid the corrupt Marine Nezumi to not report his activities.

Brook's Bounty

After taking over as Rumbar Pirates captain after the death of Yorki, Brook obtained a bounty. Since this bounty and his picture are from when he was first alive fifty years ago, it is unknown how his revival and association with the Straw Hats will affect it.

Franky's Bounty

For burning the Pluton blueprints, defeating Fukurou of the CP9, and assisting the Straw Hats in Enies Lobby, Franky received a bounty.

Robin's Bounty

First Bounty:
Nico Robin has a Beli 79,000,000 bounty from 20 years ago, assigned to her when she was only eight years old. It is claimed that she sunk 6 Buster Call ships, but in the Enies Lobby arc it is revealed as nothing more than a lie from the government. The real reason behind her bounty is her ability to read Poneglyphs.

Second Bounty:
After the events at Enies Lobby, Robin's bounty had a slight increase, making it Beli 80,000,000.

Chopper's Bounty

After the events at Enies Lobby, Chopper was given a bounty. The number is low because the World Government believes he is simply the crew's pet. Chopper was shocked when he found out how low his bounty was.

Sanji's Bounty

Because of the events at Enies Lobby and for defeating Jyabura of the CP9, Sanji was given a bounty. However, Sanji's poster has a sketch of him (which hardly looks like him), rather than a photograph. According to the manga, this is because the photographer forgot to remove the lens cap before taking his picture.

Usopp's Bounty

Following the events at Enies Lobby, a bounty was placed on Usopp's (under the name of Sogeking) head, for burning down the Governments Flag and attacking CP9 leader Spandam.

Nami's Bounty

After the Enies Lobby arc and for defeating Kalifa of the CP9, Nami was given a bounty.

Zoro's Bounty

First Bounty:
The swordsman of the Straw Hat Crew, he received a Beli 60,000,000 bounty after he defeated the assassin Das Bones (Mr. 1) in the Arabasta Arc and for defeating 100 bounty hunters in Whiskey Peak.

Second Bounty:
After the events at Enies Lobby and for defeating Kaku of the CP9, Zoro's bounty was raised to Beli 120,000,000.

Luffy's Bounty

First Bounty:
After Luffy defeated Arlong at Arlong Park Arc, the Straw Hats beat up the corrupt Marine captain Nezumi so he would return Nami's treasure. Nezumi, wanting revenge against Luffy, personally ensured a bounty of Beli 30,000,000 for him, giving him the highest bounty in East Blue. The Marines were also annoyed deeply at the time because Luffy proved their units were meaningless because he resolved the problems in the East Blue himself.

Second Bounty:
After heavily disrupting the balance of the Three Great Powers by defeating Sir Crocodile, forcing the government to public recognize Crocodile's and his organization Baroque Works criminal activities leading to his arrest and removal of his position as a Shichibukai, Luffy's bounty was raised to Beli 100,000,000.

Third Bounty:
After the assault over the Enies Lobby and the defeat of various government agents including Rob Lucci of the CP9 in order to rescue Nico Robin from going through the Gates of Justice and being executed, Luffy's bounty was raised to Beli 300,000,000.

Eustass Kid

Name: Eustass Kid
Jap. Name: ユースタス・キッド
Affiliations: Kid Pirates
Nickname: Eustass "Captain" Kid
1st Appears: Chapter 498, Episode 392
Bounty:
Beli 315,000,000

Eustass Kid, known as the "Captain" is an infamous pirate. He is one of The Eleven Supernovas who are all renowned pirates on Sabaody Archipelago whose individual bounties are greater than Beli 100,000,000 when the Straw Hats arrive in the place. He owns the highest revealed bounty that is still active, higher than Luffy's bounty by Beli 15,000,000, and the third highest number seen so far in the series, after Donquixote Doflamingo and Gecko Moria. The reason his bounty is so high, is because his crew has caused huge numbers of civilian casualties in the course of their activities.

Kid possesses some kind of Devil Fruit power connected to magnetism. He initially uses this power to repel incoming cannonballs with his left arm, propelling them at high speed back toward the attackers. Later, he used his power to steal hundreds of weapons from attacking Marines and various metal objects from all over the auction house, which gathered and connected to his right hand, taking the shape of a giant arm (much like Luffy's Gear Third), that even seems to have fingers. This effectively makes him impossible to defeat with metal weapons such as swords. He, along with the rest of his crew, also showed flawless resistance to the Haki fired by Silvers Rayleigh at the Auction House.
